Personal Statement

Personal Statement

I am a political scientist whose commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion is very strong. I implement the active learning exercise in the classroom by engaging students in what I teach. My students and I actively engage in Socratic dialogue where we address a vast array of issues. As a political scientist, my research examines how government institutions and other policy stakeholders participate in the policy process and the impact of public policy on society. Dr. B has three overlapping research areas, all of which include an examination of political institutions and the policy process:

First, he focus on health policies that affect low-income individuals, such as Medicaid and period poverty;

Second, he examine policies related to COVID-19, including theoretical work on policymakers’ policy learning and the COVID-19 pandemic response; and

Finally, he investigate how the dynamics of U.S. politics, including political parties, shape institutions, such as Congress, and, in turn, influence public policy.

All of these inform his teaching and research and seek to help students understand the interplay among public policy/health policy, political institutions, and politics.
